APOGEE

(Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment)
(SDSS near-infrared survey of stars)

APOGEE (for Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment) is a sub-survey of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) carrying out infrared spectrographic observation of Milky Way stars, focused on red giants, using infrared that penetrates dust, thus revealing the inner portion of the galaxy. The observations are carried out with the APOGEE-N spectrograph on the Sloan 2.5m Telescope and APOGEE-S on the du Pont Telescope at lascampanasobservatory. Observation began in 2011 with the initial release of 50,000 stars in 2014 (SDSS DR10), now termed APOGEE-1. The SDSS-IV program included APOGEE-2, an expanded version including more of the southern hemisphere with the addition of APOGEE-S. Its initial release of 200,000+ stars observed from Apache Point was in 2016 (SDSS DR14), with data from APOGEE-S added in 2018 (SDSS DR16). The latest release as of 2022 is SDSS DR17 (2021) with more than 300,000 stars.
