EMPIRE Survey

(EMIR Multi-line Probe of the ISM Regulating Galaxy Evolution)
(survey of gas in M51a to follow up PAWS)

The EMPIRE Survey (EMIR Multi-line Probe of the Interstellar Medium (ISM) Regulating Galaxy Evolution) is a survey of gas Spectral Lines in Whirlpool Galaxy (M51a), a Grand Design Spiral Galaxy. It uses the EMIR instrument on the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC). Whereas PAWS mapped the Carbon Monoxide (CO)(1-0) line, this survey maps molecular lines in the 3mm Atmospheric Window, specifically, HCN, HCO+, and HNC lines within that window. I gather the Angular Resolution is about half an arcminute.
