HERA

(Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array)
(low frequency radio telescope)

HERA (Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization (EOR)) is a Radio Telescope in South Africa operating at 100-200MHz, aimed at detecting the Hydrogen (H) 21cm Line Redshifted (z) from the Epoch of Reionization (much like Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) and Low-Frequency Array (LOFAR)). Designed borrowed from their experiences and that of PAPER, which has been declared to be HERA's Phase I.

HERA (proper) aims for a smaller Field of View (FOV) but more sensitivity, consisting of fixed 14m dishes in a tight array that view the sky as it pass over them. A 19-element array was put in service in 2017, and the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) has provided funding to increase it to 240 elements in 2018.
