M87

M87 (for Messier 87, also Virgo A, NGC 4486, Virgo X-1, or UGC 7654) is the second brightest galaxy in the northern Virgo Cluster, about 53 million light-years away. It is a featureless giant elliptical galaxy, but does have many orbiting globular clusters, and has a relativistic jet, which includes a feature of interest, a bright spot (of varying brightness) designated HST-1. M87's supermassive black hole, M87*, has been a target of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) and has been imaged. Characteristics:

• 7.2 arcmin - apparent dimension (angular diameter).
