Project 8

(experiment in development to measure neutrino mass)

Project 8 is a planned experiment to measure the mass of a neutrino, a collaboration of several universities. Its general strategy, like that of KATRIN, is to measure the kinetic energy of electrons produced by the beta decay of tritium (3H). The challenge in both cases is the precise measurement of the kinetic energy. Project 8 aims to use a technology termed cyclotron radiation emission spectroscopy (CRES). The frequency of cyclotron radiation due to an electron within a magnetic field depends upon the kinetic energy of the electron, offering a means of its precise measurement.
