COSINE-100

(dark matter detection experiment in South Korea)

COSINE-100 is a dark matter particle detector at Yangyang, South Korea. It is similar to DAMA/LIBRA, and among its intentions is to attempt to reproduce the announced DAMA-LIBRA results. The detector consists of carefully shielded scintillators of sodium iodide crystals (NaI) doped with thallium expected to interact with WIMPs, with a surrounding liquid scintillator, along with photomultiplier tubes to sense the interactions. The aim is to detect a variation in the number of interactions that is proportional to Earth's speed passing through the Milky Way's dark matter, which would vary over the course of Earth's orbit around the Sun. Other types of particle interactions would be less likely to show this particular pattern.

COSINE-100 is a follow-on to two other similar experiments, a collaboration of the two experiments' consortiums, KIMS (for Korean Invisible Mass Search) and DM-Ice. KIMS ran a similar experiment with a smaller scintillator at the same site as COSINE-100, and DM-Ice ran a similar experiment at South Pole Station called DM-Ice17. COSINE-200 is a future follow-on experiment to COSINE-100.
