Maunder Minimum

(1600s-1700s period of fewer sunspots)

The Maunder Minimum was a period from 1645 to 1715 during which sunspots were rare. The solar cycle was evident, but each cycle with on the order of 10 spots rather than the typical hundreds to more than a thousand. There have been other recorded and detected periods of reduced sunspots.

The Maunder Minimum occurred during a multiple-century period of cold temperatures (the Little Ice Age). A relationship suggests itself but current analysis varies regarding whether there is one.
