Solar Flare

(sudden brightening of the Sun)

A Solar Flare is a sudden brightening of the Sun. Other stars also flare (Stellar Flares).

Solar Flares vary in brightness and the energy presumed to be released. They can affect power and communications on Earth. They are generally assumed to be the results of Magnetic Reconnection.
