kappa distribution

(one distribution of velocities of particles out of equilibrium)

The kappa distribution is a probability distribution analogous to the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution (of the velocities of particles), but that applies to certain situations that are not in thermodynamic equilibrium. Among its uses in astrophysics is modeling plasma, including modeling solar activity such as solar flares. The associated probability density function includes a parameter kappa (κ) and tends toward the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution with increasing kappa.
