(radio telescope array of 14 dishes in Netherlands)
Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope
(WSRT, Westerbork Radio Telescope)
is an array of 14 25-m dishes, 10 in fixed locations and 4 on tracks,
near the town of Westerbork in the Netherlands, completed in 1970
and run by ASTRON. They are in a line, some movable, offering
baselines up to 2.7 km.
One of the receiver types, APERTIF (or Apertif), consists of a
focal plane array of radio receivers, designed to increase the field of view,
especially useful for surveys.
Twelve of the telescopes have APERTIF FPAs installed, which are
generally performing surveys.
Note: the survey-based designatorWSTB is used to designate WSRT radio sources,
e.g., "WSTB 64W55", a first number indicating a particular list of
sources and the second, a number for a particular source
within that list.
There are more than sixty such numbered lists of WSRT observations.
These sources are sometimes cited in
the form "64 W 55" (i.e., not including the prefix "WSTB").
