Local Sheet

(flat grouping of galaxies around the Local Group)

The Local Sheet is a flat grouping of galaxies including the Local Group. It is about 7 Mpc across and 0.5 Mpc thick and is within the Local Volume (a name for all space within 10 Mpc of us), in turn, a portion of the Virgo Supercluster. It includes 12 surrounding large galaxies beyond the Local Group which are sometimes termed the Council of Giants, plus their satellite galaxies, and presumably other dwarf galaxies in the region. The Local Sheet's galaxies are relatively consistent regarding peculiar velocity.
